Like always I'm looking forward to see what Nintendo has to show and announce. Though they decided not to do an E3 Press Conference this year, and are replacing it with a special monthly Nintendo Direct live stream instead, hopefully it can compare to their regular conference. They are however going to be having some E3 game demos available to play at select stores across the US and Canada, you can read more about that here, and find out the demo locations here for the US and for Canada. Nintendo said that they'll be concentrating on the games this year, and that we'll be seeing titles such as a new Mario Kart, 3D Mario game, the new Smash Bros game and more.
I'll be saving my opinions on all the consoles and games for my next post after E3 is done. |

The Microsoft conference didn't interest me much this year, while the Sony conference was pretty good and announced a few games that looked interesting. Such as FF15 and KH3, though they aren't going to be exclusive titles for the system.
Microsoft recieved a lot of backlash against their Used Games and Online DRM policies, and they stuck to it while likely assuming that Sony would be doing the same. However Sony didn't follow suit, which was the obvious choice given all of the bad feedback that it had gotten. Sony then proceeded to take stabs at Microsoft in their conference by saying that the PS4 didn't have any restrictions, or any of the specific restrictions that the Xbox One was going to, and they got a load of positive feedback as a result of this while driving the crowd into a frenzy as can be seen in this video.
Sony even slipped in the fact that you would now have to pay monthly if you want to have access to online multiplayer in this video, which was a sly move to distract away from it. By mixing that fact in with a topic of much larger importance, and with some humor to go along with it, they essentially made it seem unimportant and unnoticed in comparison to the main topic. I believe that the video was also meant to signify Microsoft handing the next generation over to Sony thanks to their mistakes.
Even though Microsoft did later say that they would be removing their Used Games and Online DRM restrictions, a good deal of damage was already done. Also Microsoft still requires Kinect to be plugged in at all times, even though they say that you can disable it software side. It's odd that they force you to have it always have it connected but allow you to disable it software side, which points to the fact that they want the ability to be able to always be able to turn it on from their side and use it to spy on you. It's no surprise to learn that they've been working closely with the NS of A. Though it's nothing a little damaging or modifying the Kinect hardware can't fix, but the fact that they're trying to force that on people in general is unacceptable.
Both companies say that used game restrictions are up to the developers, so there's still the possibility for there to be some forms of DRM. Though that's no different than previous generations, unless there's more frameworks in place now for enforcing it easily, which could lead to it being used more.
Though I'd say that the Nintendo conference was the winner again this year, even though they got overshadowed by the new consoles somewhat, which was partially contributed to by the fact that they didn't hold a regular conference this year like they usually do.
Nintendo announced and showed off many great looking games, such as Super Mario 3D World, the 2 new Super Smash Bros games, Pikmin 3, Mario Kart 8, Mario and Luigi Dream Team and several others that make up a nice lineup of games, many of which I'd be interested in getting. |

This year Nintendo will only be doing an all-day Treehouse Live stream that they'll announce and show new games off during, instead of a press conference or digital event like they used to do. Also disappointingly there won't be any news for their new Nintendo NX system shown at E3 this year, though it is scheduled to launch early next year so news about it shouldn't be too far off.
I haven't made any progress on my gaming back log since last year, so I'm not looking forward to any new games or anything in particular from E3 this year. I also stopped keeping to date with gaming news like I used to since the unfortunate passing of Iwata last year, who I used to enjoy watching for over a decade and that I felt Nintendo was in safe hands with. |

I'd liked to see Mother 3 finally come out on the Virtual Console. |
My best guess is that they don't believe that the market/fanbase is big enough and just don't care.
Which is practically a crime. |

True, it was completely finished but never released due to the SNES rolling out (I think?). From what I remember, all the censorship involved with it helped set some standards at the time for more Japanese games being developed with Western audiences in mind (don't quote me on this though; I haven't read about this stuff in a long while).
There's going to be a documentary about the original translation, which may be pretty neat. |

For the first time sony announced that they won't be holding an E3 press conference this year, and they haven't announced a live stream in a different format to replace it either. Which is what nintendo did when they first stopped holding conferences, but this may just be a one off occurrence for sony.
However despite their absence this year I would still expect them to announce things during the E3 period, like most companies typically do. So if you're interested in sony related gaming news, just be on the lookout on typical gaming news outlets and the sony youtube and maybe twitch channel. Though if they do choose to have a suitable replacement stream or video, then I'll add the links for it to this post.
I haven't touched my gaming backlog or been closely following gaming related news for quite some years now, mainly just being on the lookout for major announcements at big events such as E3 or GDC and the like. So I'm not really hyped or looking forward to anything in specific, or even fully aware of what's been announced or already released for that matter.
There's just an endless amount of digital media available to consume in this day and age, whether it be reading, listening, watching, playing, interacting or even on the other side being one to create these things ourselves. There realistically isn't enough time to dedicate for everything, especially when even some individual things by themselves can eat up a great deal of time.
Though I'll still try to catch-up somewhat eventually, it's just that other things are higher on my priority list. |
