Well, if given the choice of using mami or mumi to get across the Roman sound (from the perspective of a Japanese speaker), I would have chosen mami too as the Japanese pronounced syllables of "moomi" is close but "maami" is closer. So, it makes more sense the way they did it in these two examples. The ah sound being closer to our u than the oo sound. Too easily confused as something to do with either cows or the moon if it was katakana and without a picture to go along with it. lol |
