Ok, enemy names from Bomberman 64: The Second Attack!

Some of the ones in the U.S. manual have been revised (sometimes for the worse), and a bunch of these don't appear in the manual.

Japanese wiki page for reference.

B.H.B. Army Combatant
Mad Rat
Blacky (Bat, "Blaggy" in U.S.)
BH-TYPE01 (Red light bot)
BH-TYPE02 (Mech)

Sea Urchin
Triton (Merman)
Froggy
Bukubuku (Means "swelling" or "bubbling"; named "Blowfish" in U.S.)
Grab Pot ("Kyu" is a sound effect for "grab", the enemy is a reference to the Octopus Pot, which is apparantly a kind of fishing trap for catching octopi)
Kyuun ("Seal" in U.S., still looking into definition)
Giant Crab

Jinn ("Ancestral Spirit" in U.S., genie enemy)
Harpie
Serpent ("Snake" in U.S.)
Stone Guard
Black Sheep ("Black Bull" in U.S.... That always pissed me off! It doesn't even look like a bull, why???)

Spin Chip
Magician
T-12000 (big demonic-looking thing)
Neon Juke ("Music Box" in U.S.... Take a shot!)
Playing Card Knights

B.H.B. Soldier (It is important to note that "soldier" is spelled out in katakana with this guy, whereas the "combatant" from Alcatraz had the kanji for "combatant")
Hound Dog ("Hunt Dog" in U.S.... Take another shot)
Flame Titan
Fireball (Or "Fire Ball", I dunno)

Hey check it out, we're getting into enemy names that don't show up in the English manual (although Grab Pot didn't show up either due to not-enough-page)

Bomb the Cat
Ghost
Pteranodon
Bone Tank
Child Mare (doll)

Ripper
Crazy Rider
Road Roller
Zombie
Shadow Beast

Ok, these guys from Warship Noah were in the manual

B.H.B. Soldier
BH-TYPE03 (Mech)
BH-TYPE04 (Steel robot)
Cerberus ("Red and Blue Spiritual Dogs" in U.S.)
Soul Eater (Purple demon)

Zaphe, if "kyu" is a sound effect for grabbing something, "kyuun" might be a variation on that, since IIRC that enemy in the game grabs your bombs and tosses them away.

I kind of wondered that... I guess it does grab the bomb before it bounces it back.

In that case, maybe Grabben? Hmm...

You should call it Bomb Flipper. It not only describes what it does (sort of), but it also describes how you should deal with it!

...although, yeah, "Flipper" is more of a dolphin name than a seal name BUT WHATEVER.

M'kay, I just remembered that. However, the main reason for that post was to give myself easy access to this thread >:P

Even so, made more use out of it as I just remembered that :P

But that's not half as bad as most of the name changes.

I've gotten a little out-of-touch with this thread, so I've no idea what's been covered since I last checked in. Has anyone covered the Japanese Quest manual? If not, here it is! Haven't had the chance to look through it yet, but the American manual appears to share a lot of its content, so I wouldn't be surprised if the only substantial differences are just the names.

This is too cool. And it's in color! I have the European version of the game, and the pages are in black and white (that is probably because it is in three different languages). Page layout looks similar, enemy names look the same from a glance. I'll look into it. Thanks bro! :peace:

There hasn't been a whole lot of activity in this thread since you left, so there's not a lot of catching up to do. Welcome back.

EDIT:

On the whole bit about "transforming Bomberman" in the Battle Mode... The English manual has an interesting take on how to translate character names with "bon" in them (chibibon, bonfaita, etc., like in Bomberman '94). They simply translate it as "Bomb", instead of "Bomber" like we have been doing. I think it works in this case, and I think it would work in other cases as well, actually. A few things are different though.

Slime Bomb
Bomb Centipede (ゲジボン; "ゲジゲジ" is a centipede, it's "Bomberworm" in English which admittedly makes more sense)
Chibi Bomb (チビボン; "Bomb Junior" is what it is in the English translation, which is pretty much the same I guess)
Bomberman
Bomb Fighter
Bomb Soldier
Bomb Emperor

Now to tread backwards a bit.

「そうげん」ゾーン - Field Zone (could be grasslands or whatever, but Field Zone is used in the English version and it works)

Water Commander
Ballom
Funya (フニャ, arrrgh Funya why you gotta be all up in my grill again. This guy is called "Blobby" in the manual I have, but it's clearly "Funya", an old Bomberman enemy. "funyafunya" is "flabby" or "soft" or something. I guess "Blobby" is an okay translation, not sure)
Pegi (ペギー, "Pengy" in the European version, another old enemy)
Archer

「しんしん」ゾーン - Forest Zone ("shinshin" is "deeply wooded", pretty much)

Electro Commander (エレキ is an abbreviation for "electric", so I'm going to go with the official translators here)
Mecha Mecha Boom (メカメカドン, "Mechabomb" in the translation, "don" is a sound effect for a big explosion)
Propeller Prune? (プルプルーン, puru-n is a prune, it has propellers... word play? "Balbaloon" in the English manual, but that can't be right)
Sandi (サンディ, "Sandey" in the manual, it's the same hand from SB3)
Yadooru (ヤドール, "Shelterine" in English, which is a blatant renaming. Any help on this one? It's the cone shell enemy with claws)

「みずべ」ゾーン - Waterside Zone ("Beach Zone" in the translation)

Hurricane Commander (interestingly, his name really is just Hurricane Commander. It's "Hurricommander" in the translations, but the full word "harike-n" appears in the text)
Pinokion (snowman monster)
Sea Balloon (same old octopus monster from SB3, "Seeballoon" in the translation... really? Why?)
Dragon Puppy (パピードラゴン, "Dragon Pup" in the translation)

「さばく」ゾーン - Desert Zone

Burning Commander (バーニングコマンダー, wow... who would have thought. I certainly didn't! I can't believe this one slipped by me before. He's named "Pyro Commander" in the English versions)
Hopping Hare? (ウサピョン, "usa" is "rabbit" or "hare", "pyompyon" is "hopping"... so)
Funny (ファニー, named "Hoopster" in the translation)
Shadow Knight
Walking Hat

And yes, the one and only village is named "Peace Town".

There are of course many more monsters, but they aren't covered in the manual.

While I'm at it, I might as well get around to finally figuring out the real names for those Bomberman '94 Battle Mode characters. There is apparantly a full character list for the Bomberman series in the Japanese wiki. Yes. A full one, or at least it seems. You probably already knew this, but I did not.

Bomb Student (ガクボン, "gaku" is learning or knowledge, "gakubou" is a school cap, and the wiki page describes him as wearing glasses and a school uniform, so I'd say "student" is probably a good word to use here)
Bomber Lady (ボンバーレディー)
Bomb Grandpa (ボンジー)
Site Man? (ゲンバーマン, "genba" is a location or site, such as for construction, amongst other things. There is no "bon" in this name, because it's sort of a pun on Bomberman I guess)
Little Bomb (チョビボン)
Chubby Bomb (デボン, "debon", pun on "debu" which is chubby or fat)
Bomb Yankee (ボンキー, a pun on "ヤンキー", which is a delinquent or a "bad boy")
Bomb Saver? (ボンセイバー, yeah this one was always weird... the toy robot Bomber)

And now that I've gone and done that, it feels like it was already done before... Oh well. Yay for redundancy?

Old Bomb? (ボンジー, "bonji-", "roujin" is an old person, I don't know... any guesses? It's the old man with the cane)

I believe that this is made up of bon = bomber, jii = jii-san which refers to a relatively old man or a grandfather.

Being a very big fan of Bomberman over the years, I am very glad to see people with knowledge of the Japanese language actively translating the guide book's and manuals.

Dark Zaphe, I used your translations of the manual from "Super Bomberman 3" and incorporated them into the manual all in English text. Now please keep in mind that I am not very technological with editing software whatsoever, so it is not at all very professional... but it should pass.

If anyone has a better handling of editing software I would not take offense if you posted your own. :peace:

STAGE 5-6

These have only been posted on this Forum by the way, and I hope that Dark Zaphe doesn't mind that I used his translations; if so I will remove them asap.

ENJOY~~!

That's actually pretty good! There are a few things that could be revised, and some of my old translations seem a bit rough looking back, but you did some excellent touch-up work. I think you picked some great fonts for the titles, although the font for the descriptive text could probably be replaced.

A couple of years ago, a friend of mine on the forums made a "fixed" version of the SB3 scans, removing the binding/staples and edges, fixing the angles and probably recentering things. I never did much with it that wasn't lost to a hard drive crash. It would probably best to continue any sort of scanlation process with those. I might post a link here sometime this week, I'm pretty sure that he wouldn't mind and he's not around to ask.

It would be interesting to see a scanlation get off the ground, for sure.

Thank you very much! :veryhappy:

I actually was second guessing the descriptive text, but as I said I'm not very technological so my font's are kind of scarce in a sense.
If you know of ways to acquire different types of font's let me know!

Also the "fixed" versions of the scans would be greatly appreciated if it isn't too much of a burden  .

EDIT: [Misunderstood, read too fast. :P]

-----------------------------------------------------

There is also something else I worked on, Saturn Bomberman Fight!! with English video annotations. I asked a while back from Ragey about using his video's he uploaded and incorporating annotations into them, in which he agreed. :veryhappy:

The timing of the annotations should be... "passable"  (I didn't really focus on timing), but in any case I hope you enjoy them!

And again I would not take offense in someone else posting their videos, etc.
