If you're still looking into purchasable PC games, I recommend these ones that I've personally enjoyed at one time or another (in no real order).

StarCraft (although it may not be as fun without net play, but that's debatable. If you did like it, you can also get its expansion pack, Brood War)
Warlords III (Reign of Heroes or Darklords Rising, both are the same game, but Darklords Rising has added features for the cost of no in-game music for some apparent reason.)
Roller Coaster Tycoon (and its expansion packs, was pretty fun when I was first into it)
Worms Armageddon

Basically, nothing that nobody else hasn't already suggested.
