I meant to suggest that myself, but I mustn't have been quick enough on the draw. =P
In an attempt to get all the Panic Bomber pages finished for the site, I did a little bit of translating for the Virtual Boy's story, though I'm pretty horrendous at it and hit a roadblock everytime kanji is involved.
Quote:
Many adventurers trek to "Nori Nori Island," a land permanently enshrouded in mist, in search of the "Golden Bomberman statue" which lies there. However, although many have gone in search of the treasure, none have returned...

"Those with the courage to obtain the three medals located on the island will be granted access to the Golden Bomberman statue and all the riches they could wish for"...

Land ho!! To Nori Nori Island!

Ha ha ha, after decades of inactivity, I never expected another guest to set foot upon the "Cursed Island."
After that SmartOCR recognises nothing and they're rather kanji-heavy so it's out of my hands. I'm sure someone who doesn't completely blunder at proper usage of the English langauge could polish them up (I don't like "decades of inactivity", but considering this is just placeholder stuff I wasn't in the mood think up a better version of "after a few dozen years of people not coming anymore because this place is spooooooky"). Yeah, "land ho!!" was just guessed; that third letter shows up again in the last panel but I don't recognise it, unless it's just a stylised take on the letter.

Also, Bomber Wolf's description says he's a funky guy I like the character more already.

Funky guy, eh? I have always wanted to see a breakdancing bomberman. Mario got DDR, but Bomberman never had a chance.

Heyy, where is the Panic Bomber manual that you're looking at? The only one I have is the one I posted a link to early on, and the scans are so small that some of the text is difficult to decipher...

Oh yeah, Bomberman GB 3 website. I'm pretty sure someone has mentioned this before, but I'm bringing it back up again. I've had this page bookmarked for a long time but never really looked at it because I guess I didn't figure I needed to. But I opened it, by chance, yesterday and noticed first thing that Bagura is mentioned in Devil Bomber's profile. Only problem is... I have not the slightest idea as to what the sentence mentioning him means. It says something about Bagura, wrath, and imprisonment. What does Bagura has to do with this...

I was able to translate the other two characters, though.

Cutie Bomber
The only female scientist of Bomber Nebula, gifted with both beauty and intelligence. She is the developer of Moto Bomber 1 through 4.

Bomberman
Defense commander for the 11th planet of Bomber Nebula. For the sake of restoring peace to the planet, he is fired up to defeat Devil Bomber.

I imagine Ragey could mean the following below. The arcade manual for NeoGeo Panic Bomber does not list much data, and he has not yet uploaded the VirtualBoy manual that I can tell from browsing.

http://randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com/Bomberman/PanicBomberPCE/ (the one he just bought)
2837px × 1425px or thereabouts
or
http://randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com/Bomberman/PanicBomberSNES/ (the one I scanned for everyone)
2013px × 1788px or thereabouts

The furigana is a bit small but in my scanning attempts I could not get it much larger without distorting it. :xeyes:

No no, he's talking about the Virtual Boy Panic Bomber... which is why I'm not sure what scans he's looking at.

Gotcha. I sent him a scan of mine, but it's not online yet on his site. If you want the scans, let me know where to email it to you. It's a 16mb rar file.

Woah, Dragon, you have a lot of manuals... Anyway this is a great help; previously I was able to get to about the third panel, but now that I can actually see what I'm reading...

[Panel 1]
In the island always shrouded in mist, "Noi Noi Island", there sleeps the "Golden Bomberman Statue". Many adventurers have set off in search of it, but none have ever returned...

[Panel 2]
"Those who obtain the 3 Medals of Power on the island will gain access to the Golden Bomberman Statue"?...

[Panel 3]
Let's go! Noi Noi Island!

[Panel 4]
Ku ku ku
After so many decades we have another guest on the feared "Cursed Island".
*"Ku ku ku" is a throaty chuckle"

[Panel 5]
You will never survive, you cannot escape, Bomberman!

[Panel 6]
Ha ha ha ha ha

[Panel 7]
Obtain the "Golden Bomberman Statue"!
*Unsure about this, there's an extra word in there

Translated a couple of boss bios from the Super Bomberman 5 manual.

Bomber Wan (ボンバーワン)
The personal pooch of Bomber Baron, it is a very fast and ferocious creature. An unpleasant critter, the only person it treats fondly is its master. It habitually buries landmines in many places.

Bomber Baron (ボンバーノ男爵)
Known as "The Baron" because, true to his name, he is a keen swindler. The master of Bomber Wan. Scatters Skulls and Clogs behind him as he flees, much to the detriment of our heroes.

That's good, but you forget:

"Wan" is a barking noise made by a dog. Hence, "Bomber Woof".

Also, ボンバーノ would be literally "Bonbano", or "Bombano" in English. Hence, Baron Bombano.

The whole manual is translated already at this website. The guy seems pretty legit, even understanding the name puns and all.

I kept it Bomber Wan because I prefer keeping the original transliteration than adding an English pun to it - Bomber Woof makes sense in English, but it loses the original's dual pun of being a dog's bark and sounding like "man." The Baron translation was kinda half-assed out so I have only myself to blame.

Yeah but you can't maintain the pun in English anyway. Everybody would be asking "what's a 'wan'? What's that have to do with a dog?" And then you'd have to explain it to them, and then they'd just be like "Oh, okay."

The pun works in Japanese because "wan" is actually a sound effect in that language... the fact that it's not a word in English makes it ultimately lose its effect in translation. If anything English speakers would think something more like "bark bark" or "woof woof" in regards to a dog bark, but they would almost certainly never think of "wan" because it's just not used. Might as well translate it so the average Bomberman fan would understand it, in my opinion at least.

On a side note, I don't understand all these barking sound effects. I mean, come on. A dog's bark sounds more like an "arf" than anything else. There's definately not a "k" or an "n" sound in there. Oh well.

Interesting data. The designers love these word puns for character names, don't they? :veryhappy:

I have to look again at what Ragey has on his server space and see what other manual scans I can contribute. My job of scanning things just got easier, especially on those guide books. My wife and I grabbed a Canon CanoScan LiDE 700F Color Image Scanner which is supposed to be delivered today sometime. We both have a lot of photos and misc stuff to scan in, so it just made sense to grab one. I tend to break them from scanning so much.

Name puns seem to be common in these kinds of games, or at least it seems that way to me. Looks like a nice scanner! :peace:

Oh? Cool!
When we translated the game, this never came up.

You gues got any advice for people who want to scan mangas without ruining them by spreading 'em flat?

I really don't know how to scan anything without flattening it straight out. I'm assuming this is in book format? The only way to scan those middle pages clearly and with a home scanning machine is to remove the binding, I would think. However, you could try making yourself some sort of digital camera setup, where you could lie the book down and still take a picture of two pages at once. I would guess that the manga isn't too thick, so you could probably get away with this without having to stretch the book tight or mash it flat. If you've got good lighting and a decent quality camera, this might be the ideal solution.

Then again, I've never scanned a whole book before, so I could just be speaking pure stupid.

I had to spread those game guides flat when scanning them, and then plop a big book of poetry on top so it would stay down. A couple of them had pages fall out and the reason I haven't got around to scanning the SBM2 and 3 guides is because their pages are also loose, so I'd probably destroy them even further by doing that. Photographing the pages seems to be the only other option, but I can't imagine the results being as good as scanning.

I've been thinking of trying taking shots with a webcam since I can't find any of those old hand operated scanners, yes.
I was hoping to find a better solution though since that isn't very pratical and the Japanese might be unreadable... but if that's my only option, then I'll try my best.

Anyway, thanks for the advice

Scanned the Super Bomberman 2 guide; I'd been putting this off for a while because the thing really is falling apart at the seams, I counted five or six separate pages that fell out while scanning this thing. I hope this scan is at least passable, because scanning this again would be a nightmare.
I've still got that Super Bomberman 3 guide to scan, and I've got one for Bomberman Land on the way. DragonBomber, would it be rude of me to ask if that Wars guide arrived?

It.... It's more than I could have hoped for...  < *tears of sheer appreciation*

A new story manga, more artwork, all those little comics that the SB4 one has... I think I'll start with the comics first on this stuff.

Thanks again for being an awesome, awesome guy!
