Consoles with backward compatibility generally require the legacy chipsets of the previous machines to play the old games, EG The Mega Drive had the Master System's Zilog Z80 as a co-processor so it could run those things, and later PS3s dropped PS2 support because the PS2's processor wasn't cost effective to manufacture. |
