So since everyone is sharing Bomberman images and such, let me share my collections. I scoured the internet for most of these images but a lot of my images are ripped/cropped from Ragey's scans. However all the screenshots I took myself.

Packs 1 and 2 (about 26 MB): http://www.mediafire.com/?0exioycx6edydzk

Pack 3 (about 160 MB): http://www.mediafire.com/?ddc78uau6574ee5#1

I'm almost finished with my 4th pack which I'll upload when I finish watching the anime. I'm at episode 40 so it'll be a little while though. :peace:

Well now, I didn't even know artwork for the Crush Bombers existed! Too bad it's just two of them.

I got my hands on that PSP Sentai Bomberman game (I can't remember its name for the life of me), so here's the scanned manual! As usual, it's the raw scans, I haven't had the time to crop and clean them.

Nice.

And... This game looks kind of weird. Page 38... Are those... Are those Teletubbies? What the f*** are those things? Look at those empty, soulless eyes...

Also, am I the only one who thinks that some of the character art is kind of off? Is Green Bomber supposed to be rubbery and disproportionate? Why is Blue Bomber a disturbing, anorexic Waluigi-sans-moustache? I don't know, these guys are kind of freaking me out.

Breast Fire.

No, not heartburn, or flaming chicken, or the thing that happens when a woman drops a cigarette down her blouse. I'm talking about the giant robot that Golem Bomber pilots in Super Bomberman 2. Last time I mentioned it, I said that it seems to be related to fighting mecha anime/manga in some way; well, after some more searching, I'm wondering if it's a reference to the anime/manga Mazinger Z. In it, the titular mecha (oh gosh, that was unintentional, no seriously) has an attack called "Breast Fire". And that seems to be the only place that I can find that name.

Anybody else have any thoughts on the matter?

****

Also, nice Jetters screens (I forgot how badass Mujoe looks without his goofy sunglasses and such). Still downloading the other pack.

Thanks plasm! I took a lot of time to rip these / scout the internet for them. I took all the Jetters images as I watched it so it was a fun process of looking for frames without subtitles. =D

And that sounds crazy! Of all the names, Breast Fire was never in my imagination! :xeyes:

Oh hey, I got my hands on the 1985 Famicom Bomberman manual. I couldn't translate any of it into anything comprehensible, but I'm really keen to see if it makes any mention of Lode Runner or the Bungeling Empire.

Oops, crap, I never got around to doing that. I also forgot to say - cool find!

Actually I came by this thread because I noticed that the cat-like Armor from Bomberman World, Nyanjiro, is pretty much Nyan Jiro or "Hearth Cat".

EDIT: Aaand here is the Story text from the original game's manual:

Code:
キミはあのロードランナーのランナーくんの過

むかしはロボットだったのだ。まだロボットだ
ったランナーくんは、ボンバーマンとよばれ、

Code:
Do you know the history of the runner Lode Runner? As a matter of fact, that runner was formerly a robot. When the runner was still a robot called Bomberman, he was assigned to the job of manufacturing bombs. Of course, as with the other robots, he was forced to work in an underground labyrinth as a minion of evil. With unbearably little light and space, one day Bomberman heard a rumor. "It seems that one who escapes to the surface will become a human." Bomberman was immediately resolved. Somehow, he would make it to the surface and become a human. However, escape to the surface would not be so simple. Many enemies would give chase in order to capture the traitor Bomberman. Bomberman's only weapons are the bombs that he creates. Will he really be able to escape to the surface? And is it truly possible for him to become human?......

Note: I'm not sure whether to translate "ランナーくん" as "Master Runner" or "Mr. Runner".

Oh that's an interesting translation there. Makes me wonder what Bomberman games would be like nowadays if they kept the human angle to their characters.

Well, they did try something like that with you-know-what for the Xbox. But if they had made them humans back in the day, it probably would be different.

Then again, they kind of needed to reboot the series after the original NES game, because otherwise they wouldn't have had a main character - Bomberman loses his signature ability when he becomes Lode Runner.

By the way, in regards to the text, I find it interesting that, at the beginning of the story text, they reveal that the Bomberman of this game will become Lode Runner at the end of the game, and then at the end of the text they question whether or not Bomberman can actually become human. That's probably why the English manuals cut out the references to Lode Runner in the story text and just left it as a surprise ending.

I wouldn't translate the "-kun" as anything, as it's not really a respectable title and doesn't imply anything like master or mr/ms or much of a translatable meaning. It's typically used for referring to people younger than themselves, for the younger crowd in general say under 30 or so. I certainly wouldn't imagine 2 older people using it to refer to each other, you'll especially hear it used and directed towards and between children and people in their teens.

It's mostly used to reference males, but when coming from relatively older people especially or people trying to be more respective and less informal in say a respective or professional position, it can also tend to be used for females. I'd say that it's more respectable than the -chan counterpart that you often have being used to reference females in similar ways, there are however more disrespectful uses for it than than with -kun, but I'm not going to get into any of that right now.

This was just a brief unspecific explanation, but it should give you an idea of some of the uses of it.

Edit: Here's some more specific descriptions for them.

So here's Pack 6. This will probably be my final pack I do. It's mostly images of Saturn Bomberman and Wars. They aren't complete by any means but I don't see myself following through with this. So anyway, enjoy bomber friends!

Hmmm...

Kuragedaru (クラゲダール), the jellyfish enemy from Super Bomberman 3 (and later games).

It shares the same name as a jellyfish monster man from Kamen Rider. And both are electric in nature. But everywhere I look, no one seems to be able to translate the name.

Surely there must be something here? "Kurage" means "jellyfish", sure, but what of "daru"? Is there any significance to it, or was the Kamen Rider character just given this name that was based on "kurage", and then the Bomberman enemy was simply named after the Kamen Rider character because both were electric jellyfish?

Also, Matango (マタンゴ), the mushroom monster from the same game - Am I correct in assuming that this is a direct reference to the Japanese movie about mushroom people that bears the same name?

I bet it totally has nothing to do with the fact that Bomberman was created in Japan. No way, no how. :shifty:

There are probably lots of cultural references that we don't get because the names are changed in translation, or because we just never get any "official" English names. Or because we just don't make the connection, like with the "Grab Pot" enemy from TSA being an "octopus pot".
